Project Overview
FishLife Pond Services recently undertook an exciting project to improve the pond design for a client seeking a plant-friendly and wildlife-attracting water feature. While the pond's water quality was already healthy and clear, its shape and depth limited its potential for supporting diverse plants and attracting wildlife. We converted the pond into a flourishing ecosystem through innovative design and skilled craftsmanship.
Case study outline
1. Initial Condition and Challenges Pond Design
The existing pond had clean, clear water, but the shape and depth weren’t suitable for a wider variety of plants. The shelving was too deep for most marginal plants, restricting planting options and reducing the pond's ability to support wildlife. The design also lacked features like ambient lighting to enhance its visual appeal.
2. Client Requirements
The client envisioned a pond that would:
Attract Wildlife: Particularly dragonflies and damselflies.
Enhance Planting Areas: With space to support a wider range of marginal pond plants.
Include Ambient Lighting: To create a visually stunning feature, especially in the evenings.
3. Refurbishment Process
1. Redesigning the Pond StructureTo make the pond more plant-friendly, we constructed internal planting borders within the pond. These borders were filled with nutrient-rich aquatic soil and topped with 14mm Cheshire Pink gravel, creating a perfect foundation for a diverse range of plants.
2. Upgrading Materials
The pond was refined using a high-quality EPDM 1mm pond liner and protective under-matting to ensure long-term durability. York cropped walling was used to enhance the pond's edges, adding a natural and elegant look.
3. Adding Key Features
Lighting: The client requested ambient lighting, and we installed Oase LunaAqua spotlights to illuminate the pond beautifully at night.
Filtration System: The existing Oase FiltoClear 16000 was serviced to maintain excellent water clarity and ensure the pond remained a healthy environment for plants and wildlife.
4. Materials Used
EPDM 1mm pond liner with protective under-matting.
York cropped walling for refined edging.
Aquatic soil and Cheshire Pink gravel for planting borders.
Oase LunaAqua spotlights for elegant lighting.
5. Final Results and Client Feedback of the Pond Design
The newly redesigned pond now features:
Planting Borders: These enable a greater variety of marginal plants, making the pond more vibrant and inviting for wildlife.
Ambient Lighting: The Oase lighting system adds an enchanting atmosphere, especially in the evenings.
Wildlife-Friendly Design: With the structural improvements, the pond now serves as a perfect habitat for dragonflies and damselflies.
The client was thrilled with the transformation. She appreciated how the new pond design combined functionality with aesthetic appeal. Trusting FishLife’s expertise, she gave us full creative freedom and was delighted with the results.
Conclusion
This project showcases FishLife Pond Services’ ability to transform ponds with expert pond design and craftsmanship. By addressing structural challenges and incorporating high-quality materials, we created a pond that supports diverse plants, attracts wildlife, and serves as a stunning garden centrepiece.
